Gemma Oaten – SEED – Eating Disorder Support Services
We are delighted that TV and film actor, Gemma Oaten, has joined our team of partners in her role as Patron of SEED – Eating Disorder Support Services, which was founded in 2000 in Hull, East Yorkshire by Marg Oaten MBE and Dennis Oaten with the aim to increase awareness of eating disorders and provide more support to those who are in need.
SEED is a voluntary organisation comprising a group of ordinary people with first-hand experience of eating disorders. The work that they do is focused on early intervention, prevention, and providing support to those suffering or those caring for someone with an eating disorder. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any other mental illness – 20% of those suffering will die as a direct result of the eating disorder or by taking their own life.
Gemma Oaten, a British actor who has appeared in Emmerdale and Holby City is the charity’s figurehead. Gemma battled an eating disorder for thirteen years – her parents and SEED helped save her life and she is proud to lead the charity forward to help save the lives of thousands of others. She is an inspiration to sufferers and living proof that these conditions are treatable and can be beaten!
